the good news is it doesn't apply to this election. of course, there's always an election in virginia every year. it won't apply until next year. >> in terms of who is likely to be disenfranchised by this new law, which group of virginians are disproportionately not likely to have the i.d. that will now be likely to be required to vote? >> i think two groups, the poor and elderly. there are some folks who are born in the earlier part of the last century who don't have birth certificates, and to get this photo i.d., you're going to have to prove you're a person, prove you're a citizen. they have gotten, as you said already in this segment, voter i.d. cards before, but that's not going to be good enough. you're going to have to obtain a photo i.d. and show perhaps that you're going to also have to produce a birth certificate. >> you know, we paid so much attention to florida in terms of the way that floridians have to wait in these big long lines and they're waiting in seven-hour lines just like virginians were in the past election, but

in 2012 this past election cycle, republicans succeeded in taking it all back. the republicans won back the governor's mansion and now not only control both the house and senate, have big enough majorities in both houses to overturn any gubernatorial veto should there be one even though there probably won't be one because the governor is a republican, too. the republicans have a total lock in north carolina and can govern at will. what they have decided to do with that power thus far is something political scientists have a term for. the term is amaze balls. the whole youth vote thing that sent date of birth victory in 2008, republicans decided to put a stop to that. new york republicans introduced a bill in the state senate this week to curb the college vote in north carolina, to lower college turnout. the way they've decided to go about doing this, as creative as it is stomach churning because the problem with trying to stop college kids from voting at the place they go to school is that you can't stop them from doing that. officially and specifically, you can

in the midterm elections in 2010, nevada republicans nominated a woman named sharron angle to run for senate in nevada. sharron angle was going to try to unseat harry reid in nevada. she was antiestablishment, tea party endorsed, super, super conservative, and this race in nevada was supposed to be a cake walk. harry reid's numbers were really bad. everybody expected harry reid to lose his job. everybody knew that the 2010 election was going very republican overall and harry reid was seen as the most vulnerable senator on the democratic side. sharron angle could not lose this race. sharron angle lost that race, and pinpointing exactly where her platform went wrong and how her behavior as a candidate lost the election, frankly, it's impossible to pinpoint, even in retrospect, because the where did i go wrong possibilities are limitless possibilities. was it when sharron angle proposed the basis for u.s. currency should be metals and oils, was it her position of even having a department of education was a violence of constitution? it's hard to say, really. but this did not help. >> thom
